News from the road

Hard to believe it is December already! I’ve been gone about 2 weeks now, but the USA feels like it’s a million miles away. Since my last report, I’ve headed back up North for a short while. I have a friend who lives in Guasave who invited my up to come see the town and go to a baseball game (Mexico has a pro league, which is sort of a combination of a minor league “B Team” for US baseball, and an honest to God Mexican league.) It was Guasave against Matzalan I think. Anyway, it was big fun! I snuck down on the field to take some pictures and got ran off by somebody official looking who worked there. The ol “no hablo espaniol” line works wonders when you are doing something you are not supposed to do here… Anyway, they sold the normal fare in the stadium, peanuts and beer and whatnot, but some other interesting stuff as well, like corn and cheese in a paper cup, some bizarre chocolate mix drink that looked kind of lumpy to me, (again, hot and steaming in a paper cup) and something that resembled a really well done hot dog wrapped in a corn husk. Don’t ask – I don’t know.

I went out to Playa Gloria, a really pretty beach area known mostly to the locals. It was very underdeveloped, which was nice to see. Like most countries, beaches here seem to be teeming with development intended to milk the tourist of the oh so precious dollar,  so it was really nice to see the developers have not found this place yet. While there, we ate in a really cool thatched hut restaurant on the beach, which served some really fresh fish. I believe my beer, fish, salsa, lime and chips cost around us. If they had that back in the states, I’d be big as a house.

Left this morning, with the intention of making it to Tepic, but as I passed through Matzalan, I decided to stay the night and look up some friends from last time. Tepic is about 3 hours South and I can take my time in the am and still get there well before dark. On the way here today, I stopped in a small fishing village called Santa Cruz. I found this really out of the way restaurant on the beach and had lunch. It was wonderful, sitting there feeling the breeze from the ocean and eating this excellent meal of fish. You should have seen the looks I got as I walked in wearing all my biker gear. By the looks of the locals, you’d have thought I’d just come from the moon.

OK, all for now. Enjoy the new pictures, and send me an email. I really need some contact in English!
